Orthotics, stability shoes, cushion…are they helpful or hurtful?

Are stability shoes, orthotics and cushioned shoes always necessary for comfortable running and walking? Could they be detrimental?

Is foot pain keeping you from your favorite activities, or even just getting out of bed in the morning?
